How come the death of a pet
feels so bad?

The death of a pet can be as hard as any other death in the family as we are loosing one of our best friends, be they four legged, two winged or one finned.

Dog | Cats | Goldfish

beach, foot print, The death of a pet can affect us so deeply. Our pets become very much part of the fabric of our daily lives.

We feed them. We groom them. We are responsible for their bathroom hygiene. We keep their habitat clean. We take them to the vet. They depend on us for so many things.

In return they provide us with their presence. Their playfulness. Their attention. Their company.

Most important is their company. Their company comes with very few emotional strings attached. As long as we feed, house and clean them, they are fine.

So many of us would feel much more lonely without our pets around. That's what makes so hard, when they leave us. When we have a pet dying.

We miss their company. We miss the little (or big) sounds they make. We miss touching them. We miss their presence.

We do miss them. Period.

The death of a pet has several names:

Below are again opportunities to share stories and pictures of our special friends dying. Animals dying. A pet death is an important event. It is part of their journey with us. It is part of our completion with them. Come and tell it.

Dying Dogs
No one walks with us anymore in the morning. Running ahead for a while. But always coming back to make sure we are still there. Always ready to go for a walk. Come rain or snow or sun. Let's go.

Dying Cats
No one makes sure that WE wake up early in the morning, so THEY can get their wet food. They absolutely cannot wait for it. No way.

Goldfish Dying
No one needs feeding anymore. Those little flakes on the surface of the water. Smelling slightly fishy. Our fish friends quickly swim to the surface and snap them up. One after the other. And then go back to swimming around. Doing their thing.

Four Legs, One special friend
Four Legs, One Special Friend - January 18, 2011

Father, I come to you tonight with praise and tears, as our dear Buddy, our sweet, old friend is ...

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

We have been seen, and when we and our special friend meet, we take him or her in our arms and embrace. Our face is kissed again and again and again, and we look once more into the eyes of our trusting pet.

Then we cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.
