Do you ever have dreams about dying?

Do you ever have dreams about dying? Here are a few suggestions as to what they mean and how they can be of use to us.

sunset, moon, north pole, pole When we have dreams about dying, our own dying, it can be a frightening experience. Especially when we have not gotten close enough to death to call it our friend.

It can feel very disconcerting. One minute we feel like this is the end of our current life. The next minute we are awake and all that intense dying experience was not real. Just a dream. Just a dream.

It can also be an opportunity to practice. Practice dying. Get close to this thing called dying. Sink deeply into it with all our dream senses. Feel every aspect of it. Be in it.

When we wake up we know: it was just a dream. We are still alive. We are still alive in our bodies. We are (most likely) in a comfortable bed just waking up. Ready to either go back to sleep or get up and start our day.

Just like being in a good movie. We get completely lost in the fears and hopes of the actors. The story of the movie. While sitting in a comfortable chair in an air conditioned darkened movie theater.

Most dream interpreters agree that dreams about death and/or dying are not a portent of our own death to come. They have more to do with letting go of something important in our lives.

We might ask ourselves: what if I am letting go of something which has been so much part of me, that letting go of it feels like dying?

Who knows what the answer might look like... Click here for a sample of what a dream dictionary can offer you on dying.

Here is a lyrical and haunting song which for me directly relates to dreams about dying: Art Garfunkel's "Bright Eyes". I like listening to it late at night, often on repeat. Below are the first few stanzas of the song:

Is it a kind of dream,
Floating out on the tide,
Following the river of death downstream?
Oh, is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon,
A strange glow in the sky,
And nobody seems to know where you go,
And what does it mean?
Oh, is it a dream?

Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.
