Quotes on Death

Quotes on death can be a first step to explore the subject of death and dying through a variety of short and concise voices.

Life | Forgiveness | Comfort | Rest in Peace | Grief and Loss
Gratitude | Tears | Fear | Spiritual | Choices | Irreverent

sunset, gotland When we are preparing ourselves to find out what dying is really about. When we are open to making death our friend instead of enemy. When we explore our deep rooted beliefs around dying and death. Then quotes on death can be an easy entry point.

One way is to read through all of them and check out which death quote we connect to. Which one feels like truth to us. Which one matches what we think and feel.

We can also check out the ones which we don't connect to. Which ones don't feel like truth to us. Which ones do not match what we feel and think.

That way we can map out our beliefs, thoughts, ideas, concepts and feelings around dying and death. Not a detailed map with exact locations, but an aerial map with general overviews.

I have put together twelve pages of wise quotes on death and dying. Including one with irreverent quotes on this seemingly dark subject. What a way to populate our map.

Don't strew me with roses after I'm dead.
When Death claims the light of my brow,
No flowers of life will cheer me: instead
You may give me my roses now!

Seeing death as the end of life
is like seeing the horizon

There are only two faces to existence -
birth and death -
and life survives them both.
Just so sunrise and sunset
are not essentially different:
it all depends on whether one
is facing east or west.

- Joy Mills -

Death is terrifying
because it is so ordinary.
It happens all the time.

- Susan Cheever -

This particular nurse said,
Cancer cells are those
which have forgotten how to die.
I was so struck by this statement.

It is possible to provide security
against other ills,
but as far as death is concerned,
we men live in a city without walls.

- Epicurus -

Ancient Egyptians believed that
upon death they would be asked two questions
and their answers would determine
whether they could continue
their journey in the afterlife.
The first question was, "Did you bring joy?"
The second was, "Did you find joy?".

- Leo Buscaglia -

In the world to come,
I shall not be asked,
"Why were you not Moses?"
I shall be asked,
"Why were you not Zusya?"

- Rabbi Zusya -

If you were to rush into this room right now
and announce that you had struck a deal
with God, Allah, Buddha, Christ, Krishna,
Bill Gates, whoever -
in which the ten years since my diagnosis
could be magically taken away,
traded in for the person I was before,
I would, without a moment’s hesitation.
tell you to take a hike.

- Michael J. Fox, Lucky Man -

Religion is the human response
to being alive and having to die.

- F. Forrester Church -

The tender and the weak are companions of life.

is more his survivor's affair
than his own.

from a universal standpoint,
something inside
always reminds or informs us
that there are bigger things
to worry about.
